Ute Drawer Systems Buyer’s Guide: Storage Without Killing Payload

A drawer system turns the chaos in the back of your ute or wagon into a workshop you can actually find things in. But a cheap one is a heavy box of regret, so here’s what separates a system worth buying from one you’ll rip out in a year.

The payload maths nobody does

Drawer systems run roughly 60–120kg empty. Add a canopy, a fridge, recovery gear and a full set of tools and your rear payload disappears fast. Every ute has a GVM (gross vehicle mass) and a rear-axle limit — overloading them is both a safety problem and an enforcement one. Before you buy, we’ll do the maths with you: kerb weight + canopy + drawers + typical load, and make sure you’re staying under GVM.

What to look for

• Slide rating. Quality systems run 100kg+ rated slides that open fully loaded, on a slope, one-handed. Cheap slides sag and bind within a year — this is the number that separates good from junk.
• Materials. Marine ply + carpet is quiet, warm-looking and repairable. Steel frame + alloy faces takes genuine tradie abuse. Full alloy is the lightest but priciest.
• Lock-up. Drawers behind a locked canopy or hard lid are your security layer for tools — check the barrel quality and whether they lock independently.
• Fridge compatibility. If a fridge is in your future, buy the fridge slide and wing kit as one system now, not as an awkward afterthought later.

Fixed vs modular

Full-width fixed systems maximise storage and double as a flat false floor you can sleep or load on top of. Modular single drawers keep weight and cost down and can move between vehicles — handy if you change utes every few years. Most touring builds go fixed; tradies who swap trucks often lean modular.

Install & compliance

Drawers are self-certifying for WoF — no cert needed. But they must be anchored properly to the tub or tray. A loose 80kg drawer becomes a missile in a crash, so this isn’t optional. If rear seats are retained, the system can’t obstruct occupant safety. Our Auckland install includes correct anchoring to factory or rated points.
