New Zealand throws three very different surfaces at a set of tyres — Northland and Waikato clay, Central Plateau pumice, and West Coast and Northland beach sand — plus a daily commute on seal. No single tyre is perfect at all of them, so the right choice depends on where you actually drive. Here’s how to choose tyres that work here, not just in a glossy catalogue.
Match the tread to the terrain
- Clay (Northland, Waikato): greasy when wet and it packs into the tread instantly. You want big, open, self-cleaning voids that fling the mud out — this is where a true mud-terrain earns its keep.
- Pumice & sand (Central North Island, beaches): flotation beats bite. Aired down to 15–18 PSI, a strong, flexible sidewall matters more than aggressive tread. An all-terrain often does as well as a muddie here.
- Daily seal driving: muddies cost you road noise, wet-weather grip and fuel economy. If the truck is mostly a commuter, a modern aggressive all-terrain is usually the smarter, quieter buy.
Mud-terrain vs aggressive all-terrain
Be honest about your split. If you’re off-road most weekends in clay or deep mud, commit to a mud-terrain and accept the road noise. If you’re 80% road, 20% gravel and the occasional track, a top-end all-terrain gives you 90% of the capability with a fraction of the compromise. Most NZ owners are better served by a good all-terrain than they think.
Keeping it legal
- Load rating must equal or exceed your vehicle’s placard rating (check the sticker in the door jamb). Fitting an under-rated tyre is a WoF fail.
- Speed rating must also meet or beat the original — most AT/MT tyres are Q (160km/h) or S (180km/h), which is fine for NZ roads.
- Protrusion: tyres can’t poke past your guards. Wide muddies on stock guards are the most common WoF fail we see — flares or mudflaps fix it.
- Speedo: bigger diameter makes the speedo under-read. More than 10% under true speed is a fail; budget a correction if you’re going up in size.
- Tread depth: minimum 1.5mm across three-quarters of the tread width.

FAQ
Will mud tyres ruin my fuel economy? They’ll cost you a bit — aggressive tread and weight add rolling resistance. An all-terrain splits the difference.
How long do muddies last on seal? Less than an all-terrain — soft compounds and big blocks wear faster on the road. If your km are mostly tarmac, factor that in.
